BEYOND THE USUAL "BSc DEGREE"

Believe me when I tell you, people once had a life without owning degrees, there many rich business moguls out there today that do not possess a BSc degree or what have you; yet they are making big sense.
With the advent of Massive Open Online Courses and other online programs offering informal credentials, the race is on for alternative forms of certification that would be widely accepted by employers. The rave is gradually spreading across Nigeria.

“Who needs a university anymore?” asked David Wiley, a Brigham Young University professor who is an expert on the new courses, known as MOOCs. “Employers look at degrees because it’s a quick way to evaluate all 300 people who apply for a job. But as soon as there’s some other mechanism that can play that role as well as a degree, the jig is up on the monopoly of degrees.”

By the end of this year, Mr. Wiley predicted, it will become familiar to hear of people who earned alternative credentials online and got high-paying jobs at Google or other high-visibility companies. Mozilla, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and others are working to devise a system of online educational “badges” certifying exactly which skills had been learned. Some companies, like Microsoft,   yuh already offer their own certificates for trained computer technicians.

Although there are still a lot of challenges to tackle most especially cheating and operating multiple accounts  a lot is still needed to be done.
The biggest challenge so far is confirming the validity of the credential.

Prof Eric Thomas, vice-chancellor of Bristol University and president of Universities UK, is confident that the university experience cannot be easily replaced. "We have never said university is for everyone," he says. "However, I continue to be amazed by the number of graduates who tell me that the educational opportunities, the intellectual challenge and the interactions with their peers at university were hugely important in shaping their future. They can't all be making it up

"I want to live in a world where people are free to make their own choices," he says. "I think not going to university should be an option that you are not judged for. There is nothing wrong with these institutions of learning existing. What is wrong is that people go to them and pay lots of money without realising there are other ways to learn." Dale Stephens. Stephens was given $100,000 (£67,000) two years ago to skip university in America and focus on doing something in the real world instead. Soon the 21-year-old will be opening what he calls an "Uncollege" campus in London, aiming to help other bright young people to shake off the expectations of teachers, parents and politicians and do the same thing. He is confident he is tapping into a growing army of "too-cool-for-uni types" worldwide who want to follow a different path and need some help and encouragement doing it.

Nigerian are fast realising that they do not necessarily have to depend solely on BSc degrees anymore nor neither have to suffer form the never ending annual academic fiesta "ASUU STRIKE ".  Should in case you have got no idea of what am taking about, checkup www.iuniversity.org,  www.coursera.com.

Now tell me: "would you rather opt for something other than a BSc degree???"
