TABOO: a social or religious custom prohibiting or forbidding discussion of a particular practice or forbidding association with a particular person, place, or thing.
"many taboos have developed around physical and social exposure"

Simply acts prohibited or restricted by cultural or social custom.
Different countries with their own taboos; what is taboo can vary from place to place. This is why it is always important to understand the cultural taboos when visiting a different country. Some of the common ones are 
  • Abortion - terminating a pregnancy
  • Homosexuality - sexual attraction or relations with people of the same gender
  • Masturbation - manipulation of one’s own genitalia
  • Adultery - sexual intercourse with someone other than your spouse
  • Wearing shoes inside - in some places, shoes are not worn inside a house
  • Halaal - Islamic rules of eating include not eating the meat of omnivores or carnivores and not drinking alcohol
  • Kashrut - Jewish dietary laws include not eating pork or shellfish. This is also called a kosher diet
Our country Nigeria is highly cultural and traditional; beliefs and taboos are highly adhered to. Some are actively practiced while others are dormant and are not necessarily practiced presently.

1. Shaking hands is the acceptable form of greeting. You may find people bowing to their superiors and the elderly.

2. Greetings should always include some interest in your acquaintances family and health.

3. Women with children, pregnant women and the elderly should always get the right of way in public places or public transportation.

4. Do be not over complimentary of a person's dress or belongings, he or she mat feel obligated to give you what you find attractive. However, be sure to compliment a dinner or food prepared by a Nigerian host.

5. The left hand rules apply here. Do not take or give anything with the left hand. Do not eat with the left hand.


It is important to note that taboo vary extensively with ethnicity;  Now that you know that, let me introduce you to the unfamiliar ones 

•thinking of commiting Sucide?!!! 

Suicide in some parts of ibo land also is a taboo, and the family would be the ones to pay the penalty if anyone commits suicide.

You love to kill or eat animals huh???!!! 

•The Akwa people do not allow the killing on their monkeys, although this is not widely practiced in ibo land generally.

In the Eke-Idemilli area of the Ibo land, its a taboo to kill any form of snake.

DID YOU ALSO KNOW  THAT  •In some parts of Yoruba land , its a taboo for pregnant women to go near a corpse.

•In some parts of Benin, displaying palm fruits in public is a taboo , rumors have it that one could even loose his or her head.

Superstioucs you think?!!! In some parts of Urhobo Delta State, cutting of fire wood at night when the moon is full is forbidden, rumors have it that such a person could become a statue.
•Some parts of ibo land forbids eating of yam in the month of August.
